Sneaky Peak girls!

Well hello there...

OK, your right, 9 posts for this month is a bit slack, but those who are regular visitors to Venus Beach II will know that it's currently (temporally of course!) half it's size.
Thats right, Avion and I have been super crazy busy on a build for the Venus Gardens Sim. It's been driving Avion mad, and getting me frustrated... but it's taking shape, ever so slowly though. It's looking good, and quite a different layout than before ( but, the whole 'wilderness' theme stays). I think it's important that we create wildness areas in SL for women, with women in mind, designed by women.. Thats why Venus Gardens exists. I hope your looking forward to discovering your very own Utopia here with us!
Anyways, zipped around today and took some pics of progress so far, so I hope it doesn't ruin the surprise too much.
Venus Gardens is scheduled to re-open by Sunday, 9 December, SLT.

Guest Blogger!

Hello all!

Sorry this blog has been neglected over the past few days, have been busy over at Venus Gardens preparing a new sim for you all to enjoy, it is painfully slow work, just hope everyone likes the end result :)

In the meantime, I give the floor to Beverley Hermit, who has kindly down this blog post for you all to enjoy... Bev... It's over to you!!

Starting the Week Off RIght

So Bea and I were wandering SL this morning and found ourselves over at Duchess.  We danced and chatted and met a girl in her first month in SL.  She asked about nice placed to hang out and good music.  Did someone say free publicity?  I can never pass up a chance to plug Venus Beach II or my favorite DJ so I just had to tell them about our Monday and Thursday morning events.

So, in case you haven’t been paying attention, every Monday and Thursday, from 9:00am to 11:00am SLT, the deliciously petite DJ Bea spins her eclectic mix of blues, jazz and classic rock with some wildcards thrown in.  Much of it is electric, Laura, so we will forgive your little typo the other day.  And I promise not to tell a soul about it.  So, where was I?  Oh yeah, great tunes and the best DJ in SL.  You can trust me on that; I am a paragon of non-bias.  Anyway back to my point, and I’ll thank you to stop interrupting.  As you can tell from the photos, we had a wonderful turnout made and made some new friends which is really what it’s all about.  To top it all off the beautiful and talented Alwayz even gave us a feature dance.  Who can beat that?  No one in SL, that’s for sure.  So make sure to join us EVERY Monday and Thursday morning for a great time.  And if you don’t, I’ll keep bugging you about it.

Thanks for indulging the ranting of a lunatic!

Laura's Feminist Rant...

Last week I got such a response about my feminist post, I have decided to make it a weekly feature on this blog. To that end, i was in the process of finding content for this post, but in the process I found this from 'The Everyday Sexism Project' which i featured last week, and decided it was enough for todays' blog..

Here it is: (sorry about the crappy paste, but as long as you can see it, thats all that counts!). It's a pretty powerful read.

See you at the beach, Laura xx
I could tell you about my childhood, where I was teased for preferring the Chicago Bulls and sports to the latest tweenie heart-throb and baby dolls. Or how I endured physical and verbal harassment I had developed breasts at a you

My name is Kelley, I'm 25. Like most women, at every stage of my life, I have encountered countless testimonies of sexism. Some were small and at face value seem insignificant; some were quite painful. But I feel it is my duty as a woman and a feminist to name these issues. So, where to begin?

I could tell you about my childhood, where I was teased for preferring the Chicago Bulls and sports to the latest tweenie heart-throb and baby dolls. Or how I endured physical and verbal harassment because I had developed breasts at a young age. Or how I wasn't let on the 1st grade basketball team because I was a girl, so I was encouraged to be a cheerleader instead.

I could talk about Disney movies, where every young lady needs to be rescued by a gentleman. And Beauty and the Beast? That's right, kids. Just stick by that cruel, abusive man. You'll see he actually has a heart of gold.

Or I could talk about when I went shopping for my niece at Toys R Us, and saw an entire section actually labeled "cooking and cleaning" on the "girls'" side. Way to get them started early so they know their place.

I could talk about being a teenager growing up in a small agricultural community of about 800 people. And how men hunted, farmed, and watched demolition derbies. In that town, women were either trapped there or lived through their husbands. Their lives and happiness completely depended on men, many of whom were chauvinistic, racist, and homophobic.

I could talk about "The Kids Are Alright," which was, to my knowledge, the first and only really big movie where the main characters were lesbians. And, of course, one of them has an affair with a man. Because all women, even lesbian women, just need a penis to fix everything.

And I could talk about my life as an adult. As a college student majoring in Legal Studies, most people ask if I want to be a paralegal, while my male counterparts with the same major are asked where they will be attending law school. Or I could tell you about wearing fishnet stockings at the after-party following a night of playing in a roller derby bout, and getting my ass grabbed or slapped my men, as if what I am wearing is considered permission to touch me. Or I could talk about getting hit on by men, and when I tell them I am a lesbian, common responses include "you can bring a friend" or "you just haven't met the right man."

I could spend all day talking about religion and the damage it has done to women and homosexuals. The closed minded and hateful cite religious works as a crutch to justify sexism and homophobia. I could tell you about how I think a more progressive translation of these works would keep women and homosexuals from feeling so alienated. I could add that utilizing diversity in the voice of the church would promote love and acceptance, which goes much further than bigoted exclusion and tolerance.

I could tell you about every story I could possibly remember. About every time I read, heard, or saw something that offended me as a feminist. I could go on about how sexism was the first brand of discrimination and how it still exists in virtually every culture. I could tell you about my friends' stories. I could talk about rape and rape culture. About chastity. About western gynecology. I could talk about the harms of microaggressions and how unbelievably common they are. Or how women are seen as the "other". I could talk about the media's role in sexism. And pop culture. Politics. Women's rights to their bodies. I could talk about the sexual objectification of women. I could ask why our culture views "feminist" as a bad word. I could talk about domestic violence. I could talk about the patriarchal institution of religion. I could talk about equal pay and slut shaming. Double standards and gender roles. Male privilege. Maternity and single motherhood. I could write a book. And would I even be doing more than just nicking the tip of the iceberg?

It breaks my heart to see injustice spilling over women everywhere like this. What hurts me even more is that women get the idea that they are inferior to men drilled into their heads so much that many women begin to internalize it and believe all the bullshit about them being "less than." Women need equality in every facet of human existence. We need to make legal progress and we need to change the mentality of most of the world. It is a long journey ahead, but a necessary one. The first step is naming the problem, letting others know that this is a very real issue. And I want to thank everyone who has had the courage to share their stories as well.. Or how I wasn't let on the 1st grade basketball team because I was a girl, so I was encouraged to be a cheerleader instead.

Motown event pics!

'Mowtown" is another popular set which is rezzed from time to time at Venus Beach II. DJ Bea has a great Mowtown mix, and the actual Mowtown set is designed by our awesome builder, Avion, of course!!
Bea describes her music as 'Electric' so go figure how that fits into a Mowtown mix!!
Avion sent me a few pics from the event, i got them down to the two best... where you there? if you where, you'll be in the pic below!!
See you at the beach!!

New build for Venus Gardens

Hello there fellow VBII'ers!

Today I need to let you know of some changes ahead at Venus Beach II.

When we first started Venus Beach II in July, 2011, we agreed that the layout of the two sims would be changed on an annual basis to ensure that the place is kept fresh, and interesting to the eye. We don't want to stand still and become old and tired looking!

What we'll be doing from 20 November is closing the Venus Gardens Sim for between two to three weeks to allow a complete new build of that sim. From 20 November, that sim will be closed to everyone to ensure that the build can take place, and to keep the surprise under wraps!  Venus Gardens had a minor makeover around 10 months ago, but since launch in October 2011, has not had a major makeover.

The sim will have a similar theme, but will be very different to how it looks now, so be sure to get in and enjoy the last few days in it's current form before we sweep it all away and begin again.

In January we'll be rebuilding the main beach sim. However, that sim will remain during those works.

Stay tuned to the blog for details of when the re-lauched sim will reopen

Belated Event Pics!!

Happy weekend girls!

I managed to get Avion to finally (lol) send me some event pics from our Egyptian event that took place a few days ago. Note that I was dressed in theme, NOT. However, we joked that I was dressed in 'Modern Egyptian Attire'. Thanks to Avi for the awesome set (again!) and to all the people who rocked up.

Just a reminder that the Friday 5am SLT event is now running at 4am SLT due to the winter/summer time change. We're keeping it at that time cos it's too hard for us to be up that late to DJ and/or host, and to see if people from the UK, Europe, or Australia may want to give it a go. In March, it will return to 5am SLT..

Enjoy the pics,

Laura xx

Real Life Venus Beach....

Today for a bit of fun, I was thinking about REAL LIFE Venus Beaches!! What comes up in the Google Search? Well you could actually be quite surprised, actually quite like our own little community here in SL! Turns out that there are two real Venus Beaches!! One is in Greece, the other close by In Cyprus! I grabbed some pictures and pasted them below ~ what do you think? How are we doing for the likeness? Darn good if i say so myself!!

Enjoy!

Venus Beach II's Hidden Places - the best is saved for last!

Good evening!

Yep, we have saved the best for last. Today I am going to take you to a little known secluded spot within our sims. It's your own private retreat, complete with a dance machine, little cove, swing seats, and a private house (all our homes are open to the public unless otherwise stated)

The spot is the corner of the woods, so you'll need to find the little secret path to get to it...

Pics below.

If you have any other ideas of what you'd like to see in the parks sections (non-beachy) areas of your community, please let me know... I'm in the process of planning our new build, and any guidance will always be taken seriously.

In the meantime, enjoy VBII, each member is loved and valued for being part of our special community

Change of topic today.

I thought today for a change of scenery in our blog. I thought i'd blog about my biggest gripe in life, and perhaps relevant for a lot of us in our Venus Beach II community on so many different levels...
The issue? Sexist attitudes in our society, the old 'boys club', and the old gaurd of the patriarchal society we live in, still, in 2012... despite all the efforts that have been going on in the western world over the past few decades...
Like many, perhaps most of us I'm on Facebook. I came across a group called 'Destroy The Joint' ~ mainly Australian based, but great for anyone - Female or male - if you have an interest in this topic.
Today I wanted to highlight a few links within this Facebook page to our Second Life Community.

The first is called 'The Everyday Sexism Project'. Here we are encouraged to write comments of our everyday experiences of sexism in our everyday lives' It's quite striking, and quite a read.

I won't ruin it by posting what i think is my 'favourite' post here, they're all important posts in their own right.

Another group I found was via 'Tumbler' Women have written as many reasons they can think of to the question of 'Who needs Feminism'. Again, this is eye popping and a great read.

Google the keywords to the above and you'll find them easily. In the meantime, if your Aussie or not, 'Like' the group 'Destroy The Joint' on Facebook. It currently has almost 21K 'likes'. It's  something really close to my heart, and should be important to all of us, as women. Society won't change unless we're proactive... and that also means here in SL. Why should we put up with sexist attitudes in SL? we shouldn't. In some way, it's due to those sexist attitudes displayed by men that Venus Beach was established in 2007. Stand up for the sisterhood girls!!
